Parasite

PARASITE
Bioplastic, Microbiome (agar and root capsule), crystals, shellac flakes, natural dyes: turmeric, iron, LED lights strips
Electronic motion sensors.

Parasite emerges from the intersection of two ideas, the notion of burls, those protective formations trees develop as a healing process, and the concept of parasitic architecture. In this work, I reimagine the architectural column as a host for an external, living presence. A bioplastic form embraces one of the columns at the LMCC Arts Center on Governor's Island. It holds a bubble, containing a microbiome of agar and roots. As visitors approach, sensors activate the light and generate heat, suddenly shifting the internal life of the microbiome.
